Carmel School: A Journey Through Time

Carmel School serves as a gateway to an expansive intellectual voyage, where the seeds of knowledge are planted and nurtured, reaching far into the boundless realm of the world.

A Legacy Unfolded

The origins of Carmel School trace back to 1859, intricately connected with the heritage of St. Ann’s School. This esteemed institution owes its inception, after Divine grace, to the visionary Bishop Michael Antony Anfossi O.C.D. His unwavering dedication and foresight transformed what once seemed a distant dream into a vibrant reality.

Bishop Michael, an esteemed Italian Carmelite appointed as the Bishop of the Mangalore Diocese in 1853, was deeply committed to advancing education for the youth of Mangalore. In 1859, the Christian Brothers founded St. Mary’s English School on the Cathedral grounds, while the Sisters launched St. Ann’s English School on their own grounds.

At the same time, Mother Veronica, an English Sister from the Institute of St. Joseph of the Apparition, was training Carmelite sisters in Bayonne, France, to promote education along India’s West Coast. Guided by Divine Providence, these sisters arrived in Mangalore and, in collaboration with the Sisters of St. Ann’s School, advanced their educational mission.

In 1870, the Apostolic Carmel was formally established in Mangalore by Bishop Marie Ephrem O.C.D., and it now flourishes across India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Kenya.

In the post-independence era of 1946, as the medium of instruction shifted to the regional language, the sisters, along with a devoted team including Mr. Bhavani Rao, embraced this challenge with great resolve, upholding high educational standards throughout the transition.

For those who struggled with this change, a Private English School for Girls and Boys, essentially a collection of tuition classes, was organized under Sr. Leonilla A.C. in the modest 'Garden House' on the campus.

By December 1958, the Post Office building, previously acquired by St. Ann’s Convent, was repurposed to provide new classroom space. The institution then rebranded as St. Ann’s Carmel English Primary School.

Under the pioneering leadership of Sister Hyacintha A.C., celebrated for her contributions to Primary and Nursery education, the school flourished and earned a distinguished reputation. As the school expanded, new classrooms were added to accommodate its growing student body. By 1964, the school achieved Government recognition, which was made permanent in 1976.

Upon Sister Hyacintha's transfer in 1967, Sister Verona A.C. took the helm until 1969, continuing the school’s dedication to educational excellence.

 

 

Following her, Sister Eusebia A.C. assumed leadership, recognizing the need for a dedicated hall for children’s activities. Her tireless efforts and the support of parents led to the construction of a spacious hall in 1976, enhancing the school’s facilities. The inaugural Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) was established under Sister Eusebia’s visionary guidance.

 

 

 

 

In 1979, Sister Cabrini succeeded Sister Eusebia, leading with unwavering commitment to uphold high educational standards and co-curricular excellence. During her tenure, the school’s growth necessitated the construction of a new building, adding both ground and first floors to accommodate the increasing student body. The PTA, under her leadership, became a vibrant force, fostering strong collaboration between staff, parents, and students.

 

 

In 1992, Sister Marie Alice A.C. took on the role of Headmistress, infusing the institution with enthusiasm, energy, and a dedication to excellence. Under her leadership, the school achieved remarkable success, including a 100% pass rate in the District Level Examination for Class VII.

 

 

 

 

Sister Roshan, known for her forbearance, tolerance, and compassion, succeeded Sister Marie Alice in 1998. During her tenure, in 1990, Carmel English School secured a perfect pass rate with top ranks at the city level.

Sister Hilda Mathias A.C. succeeded Sister Roshan, bringing to life Sister Roshan’s vision of Computer Education through the installation of computers and appointment of computer faculty. Sister Hilda was known for her kindness and firm administration, effectively managing the school's challenges.

 

 

 

 

 

Sister Veronita (2004-2007), with her gentle nature, oversaw the administration with an emphasis on innovative teaching methods and a special interest in Guides and Bulbuls.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sister Roshan returned (2007-2013) to revitalize the educational landscape, introducing the CARMEL FEST to showcase students’ latent talents. New advancements included Smart Class technology for enhanced learning and the proposal for CBSE affiliation.

 

 

 

 

In 2013, the school moved to a larger building to accommodate growing needs, with Sister Sarika leading the transition.  Under her dynamic leadership, the school achieved CBSE affiliation by July 2015, enhancing its facilities with modern computer labs and a comprehensive library. The esteemed institution has been bestowed with the illustrious "Golden School" Award in the Indian Talent Search Examination for the academic year 2018-19. Furthermore, the revered Sister Sarika has earned the prestigious accolade of Best Principal, graciously conferred by the Indian Talent Team.

 

 

 

Sr. Lilly Pushpa assumed her role in 2023 with a calm and graceful presence, imbued with profound patience and understanding. As the founding principal of the alumni association, she engages with parents, teachers, and students with extraordinary care and efficiency. Under her insightful guidance, academics and co-curricular activities are seamlessly integrated and executed with elegance and precision. Her leadership shines with a harmonious blend of intellect and compassion, and she imparts gentle yet impactful guidance to the faculty, listening attentively to their needs and concerns.

Today, Carmel School boasts a student body of 1,398 from KG to Std X, supported by a dedicated faculty of 55 teaching and 15 non-teaching staff, adeptly meeting the demands of a modern educational environment.
